This summer, I traveled to Istanbul, Turkey, and Crete, Greece to visit family, and I brought my Canon AE-1 Program along to capture it all on 35mm film. Traveling with a film camera slows you down in the best way. You have to think about composition, light, and timing, which makes every shot feel intentional.
I’ve been loving Kodak Gold and Portra 400 lately. Kodak Gold is great for warm, sun-soaked colors, which was perfect for Crete, while Portra 400 gives soft, natural tones that work anywhere, especially on overcast days or in the streets of Istanbul. My Canon AE-1 Program is a trusty sidekick: simple, reliable, and the perfect weight for wandering around new cities without feeling weighed down.
Shooting film is also a great way to practice photography while staying present. You can’t just snap a hundred frames and scroll immediately. You slow down, notice details, and soak in the moment while still capturing memories.
If you’re planning a honeymoon, bringing a film camera is worth considering. It encourages you to slow down, enjoy your surroundings, and capture the trip in a way that feels personal and timeless. The Canon AE-1 is a beginner-friendly option and would be a cute gift for your significant other!
